Functional Rhinoplasty

plastic-surgery-Los-AngelesMany procedures in plastic surgery Los Angeles are becoming more acceptable.  One of the commonly performed procedures is rhinoplasty.  But not all procedures are done for cosmetic purposes only.  Many patients presenting for rhinoplasty Los Angeles also undergo treatment of a deviated septum or septoplasty to improve breathing. The septum is a cartilagenous wall that divides the nose into right and left parts. Most people (as many as 80%) have a deviated septum. Mild septal deviation does not typically cause any symptoms, whereas more significant septal deviation may cause nasal airway obstruction symptoms. Septoplasty is a surgical procedure done to straighten the septum to treat the symptoms of nasal airway obstruction. Septoplasty is frequently performed with rhinoplasty Beverly Hills.

In some people, septal deviation may be apparent externally as a nasal deviation or C shape deformity of the nose and in others only the internal portion of the septum is deviated. Septoplasty is performed using a closed (scarless) technique or open technique with the scar across the bottom midportion of the nose (columella). Septal deviation is frequently accompanied by turbinate enlargement. Turbinates are located inside the nose on the side walls. They consist of a bone covered with vascular mucosa. Enlargement of the turbinates may cause nasal airway obstruction. Many patients undergoing septoplasty also undergo reduction of the turbinates.

Rhinoplasty takes about 1-2.5 hours to perform.  In most patients a nasal splint will be placed following surgery, which will stay on for 5-7 days. Some surgeons use intranasal splints and some surgeons use packing.  Fewer surgeons chose not to place anything inside the nose after functional rhinoplasty.  Although some patients return to work or school, as early as 2-3 days after nose surgery, most patients take about 5-7 days off. Exercises can be resumed 3-4 weeks after surgery.

Functional rhinoplasty needs to be individualized for each person as every person has a different face and nose. When considering undergoing nose

surgery, it is important for you to chose a nose surgeon who performs this surgery frequently.  Surgery should be performed at an accredited facility

with board certified anesthesiologists.  Careful follow up is also part of successful outcome.

Lab Band Surgery

Lap band Los Angeles surgery is growing in popularity .  The procedure is performed to help people lose weight.  Unlike gastric bypass, this procedure is less invasive and takes 1-2 hours to perform.  Most patients go home after surgery.   Typically patients will try diet and exercise before turning to  Lap Band Glendale.  Patient lose anywhere between
Lap-band-los-angeles25- 120 pounds.   Maintaining diet and exercise is important following surgery.  Many Lap Band Beverly Hills surgeons will monitor patients on a regular basis and performing lap band adjustments to tune the weight loss process.  Following weight loss, many patients are able to perform physical activities and wear clothes that could not when they were heavier.

The LAP-BAND® System has been proven in studies to significantly reduce weight and body mass steadily. With gastric banding, initial weight loss is slower than with RNY, generally 450 – 900 grams per week; however, statistics indicate that over a 5-year period, weight loss outcome is similar. Weight regain is possible with ANY weight loss procedures including the more radical procedures that initially result in rapid weight loss. The World Health Organization recommendation for weight loss is ½ to 1 kilogram per week and an average banded patient may lose this amount. Clearly this is variable based on the individual and their personal circumstances, motivation, and mobility. The restriction imposed by the band generally needs to be greater for the initial weight loss phase and less for the subsequent weight maintenance phase. However as the patient loses weight, the internal organs (including the stomach) also shrink, and band system fill may need to be increased slightly. It should be emphasized that bandsters require ready access to a clinic where fill adjustments can be made; most patients will have between 5 and 15 fill adjustments over the lifetime of their band

This surgery is performed through a small incision (less than 1/2 inch) is made near the belly button. Carbon dioxide (a gas that occurs naturally in the body) is introduced into the abdomen to create a work space for the surgeon. Then a small laparoscopic camera is placed through the incision into the abdomen.

The camera sends a picture of the stomach and abdominal cavity to a video monitor. It gives the surgeon a good view of the key structures in the abdominal cavity. A few additional, small incisions are made in the abdomen. The surgeon watches the video monitor and works through these small incisions using instruments with long handles to complete the procedure. The surgeon creates a small, circular tunnel behind the stomach, inserts the gastric band through the tunnel, and locks the band around the stomach.

However, before deciding to have surgery, a person needs reliable and detailed information about the surgeon and where surgery is performed. Surgeons consider using the LAP-BAND® if   patient’s BMI is between 35 and 40 and there are health problem related to obesity.   Ask him or her to discuss those criteria with you. Long term,  there are no known reasons to suggest that the band should be replaced or removed at some point unless a complication occurs or you do not lose weight. Rarely, the Lapband may need to be removed or replaced at some point, which is a surgical procedure. That procedure will have all the related risks and possible complications that come with surgery.
