Children frequently copy what they see. They are good learners and they are programmed to be exactly that. Once they can walk and talk they have about ten years to learn as much as possible before being given a lot of freedom to walk the world alone. This differs from country to country and from century to century, but the principle is the same.
Although most children are fairly heavily supervised during these ten years, a lot of children do spend a bit of time alone or just in the company of just other children. This means that it is a good idea to teach children some emergency measures. In the early days, First Aid training for kids could be as easy as teaching them to phone the emergency number if they see or are in difficulty.
Thirty years ago while I was living in the Netherlands, I witnessed an attempted suicide by overdose. My friend was giving CPR and he asked me to go to the phone box and call the ambulance. I went but once I got there, 999 (the UK emergency number did not do anything). I looked around in the phone box but could not see an emergency number although my Dutch was fluent. I had to go outside and stop a passer-by to enquire. I wasted minutes and he passed away.
Before a child goes off to school at five or six, children ought to know the fundamentals like: the emergency number, not to talk to strangers, not to get into anyone’s car, that blood is dangerous and has to be treated and that bones break, so to take care when running about. Anything else would be a bonus.
You could also make a First Aid kit with your child. You could sit down, discuss the contents of a functional, personal First Aid kit and then take your child to a pharmacy to purchase the odds and ends. When back home, you could discuss how to use the contents, pack them into a box and place that in the child’s school bag.
Get into the habit of going through the contents of the kit with your child to replenish used and out-of-date things. This is also useful for reinforcing what the things are used for.
A First Aid kit for a school beginner could include soap, disposable gloves, plasters, iodine, calamine lotion, sunblock, a few small coins for the telephone and a card with your address and phone number on it..
Afterwards, as the years go by, you could add paracetamol, bandages, scissors, tweezers, matches and anything else you think is crucial.
You could extend the list of telephone numbers to include a trusted neighbour or grandparent in case you are engaged and maybe the head teacher at school too. You could hold a short quiz from time to time in the guise of a game to make certain that your child understands what everything is for and who to phone.
Once your child gets to eight or nine, enroll him or her into the scouts, guides or a paramedical association such as the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade to continue the First Aid training for kids.

Ringworm is fairly common in cats, particularly those that are not groomed or looked after well enough. However, even the most cared-for cats can get ringworm because it is so contagious.
However, ringworm is not caused by a worm. Sorry, for telling you how to suck eggs, if you already knew that, but a lot of owners do not.
Ringworm is really a fungus known as dermatophytosis and is highly infectious for most animals including humans. Cats frequently pass it on to each other while rubbing and pass it onto humans during grooming or stroking.
Not just that, but once you have the infection on your hands, you might get ringworm on your body wherever you touch yourself or you might pass it onto someone else, a different cat or your dog.
If you spot the tell-tale catherine-wheel shaped mark on your cat, you should take it to the vet immediately for treatment.
Similarly, if you or your kids pick up the infection, you must see a medical doctor or dermatologist. You should see an improvement in a couple days and complete recovery within a week or so, although treatment may go on for a fortnight to make sure complete recovery.
Occasionally, you might not see the ring-like mark, but if your cat or child is itching or scratching in one place and there are no fleas, suspect ringworm. Being a fungus, spores will drop off the host all over the house and might even get blown around in the aircon system. This could easily infect every living thing in the house, so it is nasty.
Therefore, if you think that something is wrong, but you cannot explain it, suspect ringworm, be on the look out for the signs and see to it as soon as it shows itself.
When you have your cat on your lap, check it for symptoms of ringworm. These are very frequently on the head, where it has nuzzled a cat.
Look around the eyes, the ears and on the paws for balding spots, the ring mark or just red, flakey dry skin. The cat may lick it or scratch the spot frequently and there may be dandruff.
The first thing to do is put on gloves and inspect the cat for fleas. If you do not see a heavy infestation of fleas, your cat almost certainly has ringworm so get it to the vet as soon as you can.
In the meanwhile, isolate it from your children and do not touch the patch, although it may already be too late.
The treatment for ringworm in cats is quite simple. It normally involves washing your cat every other day and applying anti-fungal cream once or two times a day to the infected patches wearing rubber gloves.
Applying the cream is not a problem, but a large number of cats really hate being washed, so this could become a problem. If your cat hates water, place it in a pillow case and fasten it at its throat with an old flea collar. This ought to stop the cat from clawing you and running away.
A similar treatment should be undergone by every member of the family, but you will only exchange your normal soap and shampoo for an anti-fungal one for a fortnight.

What have you been reading lately? At a meeting, you can soon see who the wide readers are, since wide readers often think and speak well too. They win the admiration, respect, and fellowship of others. After all, reading expands the mind and many people consider it one of the most satisfying pleasures known to mankind, combining, as it does, mental agility and physical relaxation way above the scale offered by television.
Reading is primarily a mental activity, as you read with your mind and use your imagination to paint the storyline of the action thriller you are reading. You use your mind to imagine the pleasure that the characters in the story are experiencing as the plot unfolds; or you contemplate the various arguments and ideas theorized by the author in that self-help book you are studying.
Reading effectively helps you to develop an extensive range of vocabulary through reading various types of books. A skillful reader recognizes a wide range of vocabulary. The reader may not understand exactly what every word means, but he/she will have a good idea of what the sentence is trying to say.
The act of reading makes you more alert and more curious about hitherto unknown words. Some readers even like to employ ‘the dictionary habit’, which means that whenever they find a strange word, they try to figure out what it means by the context. If they are stumped, they refer to the dictionary.
Similarly, reading develops intellectual curiosity by exposing the reader to a variety of subjects. He/she learns to read by reading books of increasing difficulty and variety. Just as in other kinds of education, he/she is learning by actually doing and while he/she is reading he/she is automatically learning about the subject matter of the book too – a free by-product!
Reading trains you to have an active and open mind. Merely understanding the writers idea is not enough, you must make a positive response to what you read. Be an active, not a passive, reader. Develop the habit of drawing your own conclusions, the habit of active thinking, of agreeing or disagreeing with the author. Always keep your mind open; understand and consider the ideas that you read. A practical part of active reading is the drawing of conclusions.
Now let me tell you to the phenomenon of speed reading. All of the above applies between three and ten times over, because speed readers can read that much faster than the average reader! Consider that! – Being able to read, comprehend and remember all those books. You would certainly become well-read in your field far more quickly than others. Just imagine how that would help you at work or in school or university …
Now, let me tell you the four primary rules for better reading and better comprehension:
1) Try to read more and more every month. Remember the saying that practice makes perfect. 2) Develop the habit of reading for main ideas, ie look for the subject and predicate – the main ideas 3) Learn to read with focus and concentration. Think of what you are reading. Good readers read with understanding. 4) Learn to budget your time. Experiment with your reading time. Try purposely to read faster. Give yourself a time limit on a specific piece that you are reading.
Reading is a wonderfully stimulating mental activity. It expands your understanding and capability. You really have so much to gain by learning the joy of reading. So, go on and take down a book right today.
Are you interested in speed reading for yourself or a dear one? If so, please go along to our website focusing on Speed Reading.. This article, Learning Speed Reading is available for free reprint.

A substantial part of First Aid training can be applied to a wide spread of circumstances, but there are also particular situations where certain information is necessary. This is fairly straightforward to understand, because a bump or a scrape can occur under any circumstances, but phenol poisoning would probably only happen in an industrial accident.
There is not much point in learning how to help victims of certain accidents if you are extremely unlikely to ever be able to apply that information. However, you ought to take advantage of each free or subsidized dedicated course that you are offered at work. The same can be stated for any pastime that you have, although you will almost certainly have to pay for the course yourself.
In this situation, I am thinking about swimmers, yachters, campers, hikers and people involved in sports or pastimes of that nature. After all, there is less point in knowing how to save a drowning person if your hobby is walking or mountaineering. Knowing First Aid pointers in the wilderness is very useful, but they are more likely to include, stroke, heart attack, broken bones and unconsciousness.
You are in essence on your own while you are in the outback or on a mountainside. If you are with a partner, all well and good, you are safer, but there is also two times the chance of an accident. However, there are more common reasons for concern than actual physical accidents.
Some of the far more common problems that happen while you are wandering in some wilderness or other are exhaustion, dehydration and insect bites. If you are hiking in the winter or above the snow line, then there is also frostbite and hypothermia to take into account.
In general, there are also snake bites and bites from large animals to consider. Fractured bones due to a fall are quite common, so if you are planning a hike into the wilderness, you actually do have to be prepared, because, if your phone is receiving a signal and the battery is charged, it could still take hours for help to get to you.
If you have a fondness for wandering in the wilderness, the first thing to do is not go alone. Ensure that you go with someone who has more experience than yourself until you can honestly say that you are proficient to lead someone else into a very perilous area where help is hours away by helicopter.
If you have learned how to go into the wilderness by partnering someone else, you ought to be all right. Another way of learning is to join the Scouts. Learning in this manner will give you plenty of time to pick up tips on how to handle exceptional situations.
Do not pretend that you are competent to lead someone else if you do not have the skill. Being stuck tens of miles from anywhere in the dark with a broken leg and no notion what to do is not going to impress anyone.

Increase Your Business Sales Through Blogging
No comments · Posted by Owen Jones in Uncategorized
A business blog, in the right hands, is a very powerful advertising tool. It is adaptable, it can be used to express any views you like, it can reach a worldwide audience and it can help you compile a mailing list of people who are interested in your business and its products – all for the sake of composing a couple of articles a week or a month.
The difficulty with any web site, and a blog is merely a specialized kind of website, is marketing it. It should not be a problem for any business to come up with pieces and information related to the business and its products. We will come back to advertising your business blog later in this article.
As the number of visitors reading your blog grows, you will have to become aware of what form of information you give them. It is better to be more than less open. You should use your blog to produce customer loyalty and this is most easily gained if people think that they can trust you. You ought to be honest to gain peoples’ trust.
Request feedback on your products and your service. This a great free manner of learning your shortcomings, otherwise you would have to commission a survey. Request of your readers to leave comments and delegate someone to read and reply to each comment
Think of your blog as your company’s booth at the biggest and longest lasting exposition that it will ever appear in. Strive to create each piece practical to the reader by providing some little known details or facts on your products or related things.
For example, if your company makes crampons for climbing, write about the latest mountaineering expeditions. If you sell tropical fish, compose articles on which fish can happily live together.
You will need to tell people that you have a blog. There are several good ways to advertise a web site or a blog. One of the best ways is … composing articles. So, you could compose articles about composing articles like I am doing now, or probably better still, publish the articles that you compose for your blog as independent, stand-alone articles in article directories with your blog URL at the bottom of the article.
These articles will get picked up by web site authors if they are interesting enough. This will give you back links to your website, the number of which Google uses to determine how popular your website is and this determines your rank in their search engine. Because Google is by far the most popular search engine in the world, it is crucial to rank highly in Google.
Add an RSS button to your blog and then people can have your posts sent to their inbox without having to check whether you have updated your blog. This is useful for the blog because no post will be missed by those who have picked up your RSS feed.
You can learn how to create a business blog by visiting web sites that teach the subject. They are usually free so you do not have much to lose.

Even older horses have to be kept quite active, especially if they have always led an active life. Old horses that have been lively are a bit like humans that are compelled to retire at 65 – they often become depressed.
Just as with humans, the body may start to show signs of wear and tear, but the mind still works well and the old horse will miss its old colleagues – human and animal – and will miss being lively.
For these reasons, you ought to never just abandon an old horse in a field thinking that you are doing it a favour by not making it work. Slacken off the work, if you like. Ride it a little less frequently, if you think it is a helpful thing, but never just leave it alone ‘to enjoy its retirement’. It will not comprehend what you are doing.
It is quite likely that the older horse will suffer from arthritis. Standing in a field all day is not a remedy for arthritis, but mild exercise can help relieve the indications of arthritis. There is no need to push your horse hard, but you can walk him and even ride him a bit, if he can take your weight. Otherwise ask a child to ride him for you.
Average mild exercise will strengthen his muscles and build up his cartilages which will alleviate the effects of arthritis. This will be healthy for the horse, but it will also be good for you as it will mean that you will require less help from the vet. It will also make him a more contented horse which will improve his digestion and general well-being.
If your horse has been left to get on with his life alone for a time, heed the advice that humans are given in the same circumstances. That is, have him checked over by the vet and get approval for your exercise plans from him. Then, have his shoes and hoofs checked so that he receives less shock from walking on tarmac. Massage some oil into his joints too, if the vet thinks it will help.
The new exercise regimen should begin mildly, but might be increased slowly as your horse becomes fitter. If you notice that your horse is still in pain, try massage. When massaging your horse’s joints, lift up a leg and lightly bend and straighten it around ten times per joint.
Try to do this three or four times a day until you see results and then walking will almost certainly obviate the need for further massage, unless you enjoy doing it too. This will ease his joints which have probably become stiff through paucity of use.
You can attempt neck stretches as well. This is best done by offering treats, say, across a fence. Make your horse reach for the treat – first up high and then down low. Give carrots rather than sweets because of your horse’s elderly teeth.
Remember that older ‘people’ have different dietary requirements to younger people and the same goes for horses.

Decent Reasons For Having A Holiday In Hawaii
No comments · Posted by Owen Jones in Uncategorized
If you are organizing your summer vacation and you are searching for somewhere where you can strip down to your bathing costume and swim all day and merely worry about it becoming overly hot, not too cold, then you ought to add a holiday in Hawaii to your short list.
A vacation in Hawaii is considered to be very expensive because of the high profile it has in films and TV series like ‘Hawaii 5-0′, but it is pretty easy to find quite reasonable holidays in Hawaii, if you do a little research. Search the Internet for last minute package deals and if that fails, try putting together your own holiday from various cut-rate parts.
You may be pleasantly surprised how much it costs to have a vacation in Hawaii compared to a comparable one in say, St. Croix, Barbados or even Florida. Look for actual hotels or guest houses in areas that are just outside the tourist traps and you will almost certainly get a better price. Many of these hotels have their own web site and so offer seasonal or last minute discounts directly to private customers.
Hawaii is one of the most beautiful locations in the area and indeed in the world. The coast is famous for its natural beauty – the swimming and diving are legendary, but the hinterland is beautiful as well, if you like walking, riding or driving by jeep. There are magnificent volcanoes, waterfalls and forests.
Hawaii has been turned into a paradise for sports enthusiasts of all types. There is very little that you could choose to do and cannot on Hawaii. There is ample opportunity for most land, sea and air sports ranging from mountaineering, to diving to hang-gliding. You can rent Jeeps, mountain bikes, yachts and even a helicopter.
Most people take a vacation in Hawaii for water sports such as swimming, diving, snorkeling, fishing and water skiing, but power boating and yachting or just sailing a dinghy is common enough too.
There are also many natural and manufactured historical sights to see on all the islands, but the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on Big Island is just about the most well-known although most of the smaller island such as Kauai, Lanai, Maui, Molokai and Oahu all have their attractions too. It is just a case of reading up on Hawaii before you go and trying to select a hotel in a spot that makes your interests easily available.
There are lots of web sites and books on Hawaii to help you with your investigation, but you can also travel around easily once you get there, so that you could have a week on one island and a week on another offering different hobbies as a specialty.
This can all be organized fairly easily if you put your tour together yourself, but it may be more tricky if you endeavor to patch two package vacations together. You will not regret your vacation in Hawaii whether you go alone, with the family or as part of a group.

The Collie dog makes an exceptional sporting dog and can be trained to do the work of the Pointer and the Setter, together with that of the Water Spaniel and the Retriever. He can be trained to perform the work of other breeds too. He is smart at hunting, having an excellent nose, is a first-rate vermin-killer, and a most loyal guard dog and buddy.
Not much is known with confidence of the origin of the Collie, but his cunning and his outward appearance would seem to indicate a relationship with the wild dog. Buffon was of opinion that he was the true dog of nature, the standard and model for the whole canine species.
He thought the Sheepdog superior in instinct and intellect to all other breeds, and that, with a character which other breeds do not share. It is the only creature that is born completely trained for the assistance of man.
At the shows this kind of dog is invariably at the top of the class. It is considered the most obedient, and is without doubt one of the most lively. The second most popular breed of this type is the smooth-coated variety, which is a very hard-working, useful dog, well adapted for hill work and normally very fleet of foot.
He is not so amiable in temper as the black and white, and is slow to make friends. There is not a more graceful and physically beautiful dog to be seen than the show Collie of the current period. Bred from the old working dog, he is now almost a distinct breed.
The skull should be flat, fairly wide between the ears, and steadily narrowing towards the eyes. There should only be a slight depression at the bottom. The width of skull inevitably depends upon the joint length of skull and muzzle; and the whole must be measured in relationship with the size of the dog. The cheeks should not be full or outstanding.
The muzzle ought to be of a fair length, tapering to the nose, and must not show weakness. Whatever the colour of the animal, the nose must be black. The teeth should be of a good size, sound and level; very slight irregularity is allowed.
The mouth should be clean-cut and powerful. The eyes are a very essential feature, giving expression to the dog; they should be of medium size, set somewhat at an angle, of almond shape and brown colour except in the case of merles, when the eyes are often (one or both) blue and white or china; expressing high intelligence, with a bright, alert look when they are listening.
The ears should be small and moderately wide at the base, located not too close together but on the top of the skull and not on the elevation of the head. When in repose they should be carried thrown back, but when on the alert brought forward and carried semi-erect, with tips slightly sagging in the posture of listening.
The neck should be muscular, powerful, of fair length, and somewhat arched. The body should be burly, with well sprung ribs, deep chest, fairly broad behind the shoulders, which should be sloped, loins very powerful..
The fore legs must be straight and strong, leaning neither in nor out at the elbows, with a fair amount of bone; the forearm rather fleshy, the pasterns showing suppleness without weakness. The hind-legs should be muscular at the thighs, clean and sinewy below the hocks, with well-bent stifles. The feet should be oval in shape, soles well padded, and the toes arched and close together.
Its general character is to be a lissom, lively dog, his deep chest showing lung power, his neck strength, his sloping shoulders and well bent hocks representing speed, and his expression of high intelligence. It should be a fair length in the leg, giving him more of a racy than a plodding appearance.
In a few words, a Collie should demonstrate endurance, activity, and intelligence, with free and deliberate actions. In height dogs should be 22 ins. to 24 ins. at the shoulders, bitches 20 ins. to 22 ins. The weight for dogs is 45 to 65 lbs., bitches 40 to 55 lbs. The smooth collie only differs from the rough in its coat, which ought to be hard, dense and very smooth.

If you want to buy a ferret for the first time, it is probably best to buy it from a breeder. This is because, if you create a friend of the breeder you can ring up for guidance at any time, whereas if you buy from a pet shop, the vendor or the shop assistant might not know much about them.
Ferrets take a bit of taking care of. They need more attention than a cat or even a dog and while most individuals can muddle through taking care of a cat or a dog, you need to learn how to take care of a ferret.
Look on line or in Yellow Pages for a ferret breeder in your region and go along on the spur of the moment, unexpected. In that way, you will see what the ferret farm is actually like, not something spruced up for your visit. If it is dirty or smelly, look for another one.
You can purchase a ferret at any age, as you can with dogs, but most individuals like to buy a baby and train it themselves. Young ferrets have limited distance vision, so you have to keep their environment clean and safe to avoid injury to their eyes or other parts.
In order to help keep their cage tidy, you should toilet-train your ferret and in order to keep your house tidy you should make it ferret-proof to stop ferrets entering your home and literally wrecking it.
A ferret costs about $100, but you will also require a cage, litter box, toys and vaccinations. You might require a license to own a ferret where you live, but the breeder will be able to counsel you on that. A vaccination against distemper may or may not be needed by law, but it is a very good idea if you cherish your pet.
If you know nothing about ferrets, the first thing to look for is the eyes. The eyes should be quick and the animal should be alert. Look out for distemper which can manifest itself in dull eyes, lethargy, runny nose and dull coat. you want a hyperactive ferret because that is what ferrets are like – very hyperactive.
Ferrets sleep a lot. Maybe 18 hours a day, but once they wake up, they are full of energy and need plenty of exercise. They need to run around, forage and hunt. Ferrets eat live birds by preference, but they will take other food too. Make certain that this food is sugar-free and is high in protein
There are toys that you can supply your ferret with to amuse itself, but these are no surrogate for real exercise. However, herein lies the problem, because ferrets are fast and climb trees, so if you have not trained it to come if called, you might never see it again once you open the cage.
Teach your ferret to respond to a name or whistle by rewarding it when it does come as you would a puppy and bathe the animal every now and again as you would a dog.

If you are looking for a doggy companion, you ought to put the Jack Russell terrier on your shortlist. Some of the best traits about the Jack Russell terrier is that they are small, inexpensive to keep, active, short-haired and intelligent. The Jack Russell terrier is a perfect dog for an older person, or someone living in an apartment.
The original Jack Russells were bred by a young theology student named John Russell studying at Oxford University in the early 19th. Century. It is said that John Russell liked the appearance of his milkman’s dog and used it for breeding. The dog, a bitch called Trump was white and had areas of brown coloured hair on its eyes and ears.
Terriers are small, active dogs. The name ‘terrier’ comes from the Latin word ‘terra’ meaning ‘earth’, because terriers like to dig and go to ground while hunting. Terriers have been used to hunt all sorts of small animals such as rats, moles, badgers, foxes and rabbits. The Jack Russell descends from fox terriers.
Jack Russell terriers like to run and dig, so they will push their owners to go for frequent walks and they have a very persuasive personality. The word ‘dogged’ could have been derived from them – they just do not give up!
Because of all their digging and rooting around, they can get pretty muddy which means bathing and grooming, although being short-haired animals, this is not a problematic task.
Nowadays, hunting with animals is banned in numerous countries, but this dog’s nature is still to hunt. They are particularly good ratters and can clean up an infestation of rats in no time. They are therefore also good dogs to keep on a farm or large garden where rodents could become a problem.
Terriers also make very good guard dogs. They will protect your property in the garden or in your home. They are very territorial and, although they will not usually molest or bite strangers, they will certainly let you know that there is a stranger about.
Having said that, it is a good thing to train your dog. If you are not sure how to do this or what to teach it, go to dog training groups or buy a book. Jack Russell terriers are very intelligent and love interaction with their masters, so they learn quickly and readily if you start them young enough, because they are also quite strong-willed dogs.
I have heard stories of Jack Russell terriers allowing strangers into a property but not permitting them to leave without being told to. This seems like a fantastic manner of catching burglars.
These dogs make great family pets, but they do not always get on with other dogs that they are not living with. This can lead to fighting and injuries.
Aside from injuries in fights, Jack Russells enjoy pretty decent health. They are not subject to any major illnesses like some other breeds are. They also live a long time frequently reaching 13 and fifteen with some Jack Russell terriers reaching 18, 19 and even 20 years of age.
