What have you been reading lately? At a meeting, you can soon see who the wide readers are, since wide readers often think and speak well too. They win the admiration, respect, and fellowship of others. After all, reading expands the mind and many people consider it one of the most satisfying pleasures known to mankind, combining, as it does, mental agility and physical relaxation way above the scale offered by television.
Reading is primarily a mental activity, as you read with your mind and use your imagination to paint the storyline of the action thriller you are reading. You use your mind to imagine the pleasure that the characters in the story are experiencing as the plot unfolds; or you contemplate the various arguments and ideas theorized by the author in that self-help book you are studying.
Reading effectively helps you to develop an extensive range of vocabulary through reading various types of books. A skillful reader recognizes a wide range of vocabulary. The reader may not understand exactly what every word means, but he/she will have a good idea of what the sentence is trying to say.
The act of reading makes you more alert and more curious about hitherto unknown words. Some readers even like to employ ‘the dictionary habit’, which means that whenever they find a strange word, they try to figure out what it means by the context. If they are stumped, they refer to the dictionary.
Similarly, reading develops intellectual curiosity by exposing the reader to a variety of subjects. He/she learns to read by reading books of increasing difficulty and variety. Just as in other kinds of education, he/she is learning by actually doing and while he/she is reading he/she is automatically learning about the subject matter of the book too – a free by-product!
Reading trains you to have an active and open mind. Merely understanding the writers idea is not enough, you must make a positive response to what you read. Be an active, not a passive, reader. Develop the habit of drawing your own conclusions, the habit of active thinking, of agreeing or disagreeing with the author. Always keep your mind open; understand and consider the ideas that you read. A practical part of active reading is the drawing of conclusions.
Now let me tell you to the phenomenon of speed reading. All of the above applies between three and ten times over, because speed readers can read that much faster than the average reader! Consider that! – Being able to read, comprehend and remember all those books. You would certainly become well-read in your field far more quickly than others. Just imagine how that would help you at work or in school or university …
Now, let me tell you the four primary rules for better reading and better comprehension:
1) Try to read more and more every month. Remember the saying that practice makes perfect. 2) Develop the habit of reading for main ideas, ie look for the subject and predicate – the main ideas 3) Learn to read with focus and concentration. Think of what you are reading. Good readers read with understanding. 4) Learn to budget your time. Experiment with your reading time. Try purposely to read faster. Give yourself a time limit on a specific piece that you are reading.
Reading is a wonderfully stimulating mental activity. It expands your understanding and capability. You really have so much to gain by learning the joy of reading. So, go on and take down a book right today.

Tips for Growing Online Dating Relationships
No comments · Posted by Owen Jones in Uncategorized
Just as with regular real-world friendships, online relationships need to be tended and to be allowed to grow over time. Here are a few quick growing tips:
1. Take Time and Make Time: Does your online partner get in touch with you often? Do you do the same? Neglecting virtual meetings can be considered rude, so treat each other’s time respectfully. If that respect is lacking, it might mean that it is time to move on.
2. Communication Needs to “Feel” Right For Both of You: If one of you is being too pushy about having a meeting, for instance, that can create ill feelings. So, please, don’t rush; take your time to learn more about each other and engender trust.
3. Respect Each Other’s Privacy: Don’t send the other person’s email addresses or digital photos to your friends, for example; especially if your online friend emailed you the information privately.
4. Share Special Online and Offline Enjoyable Times: Online: send online greeting cards; links to favorite places to upload digital photos of your favorite pet; download music and video clips; post on favourite forums of interest. Offline: if you’re exchanging addresses or post office boxes, send printed greeting cards and postcards, small items from your area (like a key chain with your state motto).
5. Share Recipes: People get tired of just discussing the weather, so a very popular subject to turn to is food. Sharing information about favourite foods and recipes will get things going and help form a point of contact; talk about your favourite cuisine and preferences. Do a search online for free recipes to share and take photos of your culinary creations and share them with your online friend too.
6. Bidding at Auctions: Ebay auctions sell anything and everything! So, surf about and enter searches like the dates you were in middle school. Share nostalgic memorabilia of old games and toys from when you were a child or when your parents or grandparents were little.
Online dating should be an educational and fun experience. So, go on, take the time to learn more about each other and have fun while youre doing it! Take a cyber-stroll down ol’ memory lane together and see what’s cookin’. Look after your online relationship, water it with care and over time it may sprout and grow.
Are you a senior dater or have you been out of the dating game for a while? If so get some online dating advice at Old Fiddles Dating. Check here for free reprint license: Tips for Growing Online Dating Relationships.

We are under great pressure not to look old, not to look our age. One of the best compliments people of more than 21 years think that they can receive is: ‘Really? You do not look it!’ To a certain extent this obsession with a youthful appearance has always been with us, but the pressure has ratcheted up due to films and television.
Film stars and pharmaceutical companies unscrupulously team up to persuade us that we need this surgery too in order to become popular. What they do not tell you is that the pharmaceutical businesses have paid the film stars to have free treatment and then paid (or sponsored) the chat shows that so blatantly promote them.
And ageism is rife too, both among the young, whose worst insults normally have the word ‘old’ included and among employers who can not wait to be rid of employees at 65 after a lifetime of service. Governments or at least some governments are just as bad, penalizing pensioners with a meager salary after fifty years of paying taxes.
People used to grow old gracefully, now it is a sin. There is a long list of ‘improvements’ that you can work your way through: face lift, liposuction, hair transplants, dentures and several others, but the one that actually makes sense to me is sight improvement by whatever technique works.
We live in a picturesque world and it is a shame that while we are at the right stage in our life to enjoy it – that is whilst we have more time, more money and have become more philosophical, we start to go blind. At the same time as your grandchildren start arriving, your sight starts going.
There are numerous reasons why you could start losing your vision besides only old age, but old age does play a role in some of them too.
Macular degeneration is usually called age-related macular degeneration, but there is a rare kind that has an impact on the young. There are two kinds wet and dry. The dry kind is less severe, but the wet kind is more easily treated.
Cataracts are considered to be age-related as well, but I had premature senile cataracts 20 years early. Luckily these are easily treated too with only a couple of minutes of surgery. Glaucoma is a nasty one, which can leave you totally blind, if you do not catch it soon enough and have it treated.
The key to success with all of these eyesight impairments is tackling them early. If you suspect that anything is wrong with your eyes, go to a medical doctor or optician immediately. Do not get fooled by quack cures that you might see advertised on late night TV or in the small ads. They ought to be banned.
Eye exercises and eye drops are fine for healthy eyes, but they will not help you if you have a problem, only a fully qualified expert can do that. These advertisers prey on individuals who either do not have the money for surgery or who are frightened of it and there are lots of them around too.

We all know that we should exercise. Some individuals even like doing it, but unfortunately for society and most of us in it, the majority of us cannot be bothered to get off their backsides, which is why the populations of Western countries are turning to lard before our very eyes. This is a shame not just for the people concerned but for the tax-payers who have to replenish the public coffers in order to take care of them when they get sick.
So, how can we motivate ourselves to take more exercise? Clearly government health warnings are merely benefiting advertising agencies and the media, so what else? Maybe, they should tell us: ‘Play tennis once a week, you will enjoy that vodka a whole lot more afterwards!’. Or ‘Play a round of golf first and that G&T will taste better!’ Or: ‘Walk a mile to the pub, have a pint, walk back and have another one, you will need it!’ The puritanical way definitely has not worked, so why not give realism a try?
I mentioned golf there quite by accident, but it strikes me that going for a game of golf and having a drink with your friends later is a whole lot better than watching it on TV with a can. It is not only the walking either, which most of us do not do enough of anyway, but it is the actions connected with hitting the ball – the swing and hand-eye co-ordination as well. And the social life afterwards, and many people miss out on a social life particularly after retirement or the death of a spouse.
Now golf might not seem to you to be an interesting sport and I understand that point of view completely, but that is because it is not until you realize how difficult it is to hit that ball hundreds of yards onto the green that most people can grasp the difficulty of playing the game well. That might be true of the majority of sports, but golf does look so leisurely, does it not?
One of the good things about golf is that you can play with golfers of equivalent ability to yourself so that you do not feel embarrassed or ‘out of place’. If you join a ramblers’ club after 30 years of watching TV, you will soon feel old and past it, but golf is different, because there is no pace, no hurry, you can take as long as you like, you can let people ‘play through’ (go on before you) and you can call it a day and retire to the club house whenever you like.
Many retired people take up golf, especially if they were used to being active at work, but it is also a hobby, that you can take up if you think that you are not active enough at any age. It is surprising how much a little bit of extra exertion can help stave off stiff limbs and chubbiness.
If you are asking yourself: Is golf a good form of exercise? Or if you are just into golf, please go over to our web site entitled Golfing Tips for Beginners

After people leave school or higher education, they tend to think that the learning part of their lives is behind them and that it is time to put that knowledge to good use to create some money and have a family. There are exceptions to this model, naturally, lots of them, but most people just give up learning and start working. Some jobs demand that the person doing the job goes on courses and keeps abreast of developments, but many do not.
Unfortunately, the part of the brain that learns, the medulla oblongata, needs continuous stimulation, otherwise it tends to hibernate and each time it goes into hibernation it gets more difficult to wake it up.
Therefore, it is good advice to keep learning. Hobbies require constant learning and so do educational toys and puzzles. ‘Use it or lose it’ is an apt saying with regard to one’s ability to learn.
Everyone has to solve problems each day, but these problems are not the same ones that our brains require to remain active. We tend to solve issues in our daily lives without having to think too much or having to do any study. Examples of the kinds of educational toys and puzzles that are beneficial are crossword puzzles, word games and sudoku.
These educational toys and puzzles are in most of the daily newspapers but some are simple and others are hard. If you purchase a newspaper in which the puzzles are fairly easy, either switch to another newspaper or buy mind games and puzzles books of the level that still challenge you.
This is the second-best approach though, it is better to have the puzzles in the newspaper that you read everyday and carry around with you so that the mind puzzles are there with you whenever you need them.
However, there are other types of mind games and puzzles that you may prefer. There are hundreds of portable games machines that you can put in your pocket or bag to be played in your dinner break or whilst travelling.
I am not thinking about ‘shoot em ups’ here, but rather portable chess machines, which permit you to play either the machine or another human.
However, you may not like chess, but you may like draughts (checkers), or any of the dozens of other board games and card games, like bridge, that have been ‘computerized’.
On a different level, there are hobbies that can produce the right sort of mind puzzle to keep your brain stimulated. Programming is one, mathematics is another. Astronomy or bridge are others.
If your child goes through a period of illness and you are concerned that he or she might be lacking stimulation, Lego could be a solution. Lego is suitable for all age groups from babies using larger blocks to teenagers utilizing computer-controlled motors.
There are loads of educational toys and puzzles for people of all ages, in fact there have never been so many, so simply go down to the mall and select one out for yourself or your dear one.

How To Earn Money Buying And Selling Used Cars Part 3
No comments · Posted by Owen Jones in Uncategorized
In the first section of this mini series on how to make money buying and selling used cars, we looked at what personal skills someone wanting to be profitable in this business would have to have. In the second part we looked at the best sites to locate such a business and in this section, we will look into acquiring our stock – our cars or trucks.
So, where can you get second-hand cars or trucks from? You will almost certainly get people coming in off the street trying to sell you their cars or trucks. That is frequently a good source of supply, if you carry out the necessary checks to make sure that they are not stolen, but this source will dry up from time to time – particularly in the summer.
Other sources to obtain stock are private auction houses, bankruptcies, bereavements and government auctions, where cars or trucks are often very heavily discounted.
At private auctions, anybody can bid for the lots that go under the hammer. Sometimes there is a minimum selling price, sometimes there is not, but the vendor must pay to enter his car in the auction anyway, which means that he has a vested concern in selling it to recoup this cost. If a car does not reach the minimum bid, try talking to the seller privately, you might pick up a genuine bargain.
If you are oblivious of local car auctions where you live, try looking in the local paper under “Up And Coming Events” or in the Yellow Pages under “Actions” or “Car Auctions” or go on line and make the same query including your region.
Government auctions are great places to buy supply of any type, including vehicles and machinery. These goods are usually either government surplus (new and used) or assets seized from the public. In The USA, it is best to register your interest in the auction catalogues of the two main governments auctioneers: the Department of Defense and the General Services Administration (GSA). Other countries have similar bodies, which your local authorities can assist you to get in contact with.
These government departments auction off tens of thousands of cars or trucks or every conceivable description every year in the USA. Cars and other cars or trucks make up a large percentage of these auctions in monetary value – you would honestly find it difficult to grasp how many vehicles the government owns in the name of the people, from limos to lawnmowers. They all need to be replaced regularly according to a schedule and the old ones are sold off.
The unbelievable fact that works so well in the business person’s favour, is that the government is more engrossed in clearing out their sheds of all this gear to make room for more than it is in spinning a profit on it. All you have to do is register with the Department of Defense and the GSA and they will send you their auction catalogues automatically. This way you will have time to inspect the goods before you tender.
The next part in this mini series will discuss how you can determine the value of the goods that are being auctioned off.

One of the most important aspects of scuba diving that a diver has to study is how to set up the breathing tank. Divers do not use oxygen in their tanks, they use (or, increasingly, used to use) compressed air. However air is roughly 70 percent nitrogen and 30 percent oxygen and the nitrogen can result in nitrogen sickness under pressure, so more and more people are turning to Nitrox.
Nitrox is not air, but it is still composed solely of nitrogen and oxygen, although not in the same ratio, which you can change. The difficulty with raising the amount of oxygen in the mix is that there is a greater chance of suffering from oxygen poisoning the deeper you go. Therefore, the trade off is that the more oxygen you use, the shallower you are allowed to swim.
It sounds like a rough decision, you can suffer from either nitrogen or oxygen toxicity, take your pick. However, there is a third option and it is known as Trimix. Trimix is the ‘air’ that deep sea divers make use of. It is a mixture of three gases, as its name implies: nitrogen oxygen and helium.
Helium is used as a kind of filler. It does not do us any injury and it does not do us any good either, but it allows divers to take a lung full and it reduces the volume of nitrogen and the volume of oxygen thereby reducing the likelihood of sickness.
The only problem with helium is that it conducts heat five times faster oxygen and nitrogen. This leads some deep sea divers to suffer from a condition known as hyperbaric arthralgia. Hyperbaric arthralgia is a kind of joint pain that some divers experience as they go deeper than 100 feet in salt water.
Deep sea divers have to learn about the various Trimixes as part of their course, because one day they will be accountable for choosing the mix they use. The option is not just compressed air, nitrox and Trimix, because there are different ratios of the gases in Trimix to take into the equation as well.
For instance, a 10/70 Trimix will be made up of 10 percent oxygen, 70 percent helium (and 20 percent nitrogen). This form of mix is suitable for diving to a depth of 330 feet in salt water or 100 msw (metres in salt water). Fresh water is a little lighter than salt water. This does not count at lower depths, but it does after a hundred feet.
Breathing and gases are merely one aspect of diving that you will have to master if you would like to go diving. Another aspect of diving that is associated with diving is the speed of ascent. Divers used to get taught not to rise faster than their smallest bubbles, which is around 60 feet per minute. However, many instructors now think that this is still quite fast and recommend 30 feet per minute with a three minute wait at 15 feet.

The patient of Lasik surgery has two main responsibilities regarding his or her eyes: firstly to select a responsible, skilled surgeon, which should not be very problematic and secondly, to take care of his eyes after the operation by following the advice of the surgeon on post-operative care. This second part is very important and should not be taken lightly.
The post-operative care process is not a problem, but if you are worried about it, you should ask your surgeon what it will entail before the procedure. The GP or a nurse will be able to explain the procedure of care to you in detail or they will give you a pamphlet.
There may be some peculiar sight aberrations for a couple of days after the operation, some of which are fairly normal. One of the most common aberrations that are standard for a couple of days are halos around lights.
However, you should be sure that you understand the difference between what is standard and so no cause for concern and what ought to be reported immediately
There are different Lasik procedures and the procedures are advancing all the time so it is not possible to give precise details in this article. Moreover, the shape of the eyes and the causes for deteriorating eyesight are individual to each patient.
Some of the advice that your Lasik surgeon may give for your post-operative eye care might include the following, although different doctors may have their own recommendations.
The first thing is to remember that you have just had an operation including anaesthetic. There might not have been any blood but it was surgery all the same.
All patients are required to take it easy after an operation and you will be no exception. If you had had an operation on your knee, you would use it as little as possible for a time and the same is helpful advice for your eye.
Attempt to sleep for a couple of hours after the operation or at least close your eyes and rest. Infection is the chief anxiety, so do not poke or rub your eye and do not strain it by trying out your recently improved eyesight by reading or watching TV.
If you have to entertain yourself in this fashion wear an eye patch. Your surgeon will almost certainly have given you a stiff plastic eye guard, which you ought to wear at all times.
Some surgeons will warn against getting water into your eye for a few days, which means washing only from the neck down, no showering, no going out in the rain and definitely no swimming.
Be wary of dazzling light, it cannot damage your eye but it does hurt. Your world will be much brighter after the surgery and looking at a light bulb can become painful. Be careful of watching moving traffic when the sun is shining, a car window can catch the sun and reflect it back into your eye unexpectedly.
You will be given eye drops so do not fail to use them. Lasik surgery can dry your eyes out, if this happens they might be able to give you substitute or extra drops.
